Time With The Father

Living Water

by Erik Martin, CS Orlando

Recently, I was talking with a Christian friend of mine who mentioned to me that he wanted to get back to surfing. Not just to enjoy the water, but also to share some bonding time with his son. This made me realize, what a reflection that is of what surfing is all about. As a Christian Surfer, being in the water is more than just about surfing and catching that perfect wave. It’s about getting close to God through His amazing creation and experiencing the peace and wonder that comes in those moments. Spending quality quiet time with our Father. Like my friend, spending quality time with his son through surfing.

James 1:17 says, “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father…”

The beauty of the ocean. The feeling of peace, in those moments when you’re floating on the water, the thrill of catching the perfect wave… These are all gifts from our Father, meant to draw our hearts closer to Him. There’s nothing that compares to experiencing God and spending time with Him, through the waters He created.

We are able to experience fellowship with Jesus and those in the water around us, through surfing. We have the amazing opportunity to share our love for God as well as His creation. In Matthew 18:20, Jesus says, “Whenever two or three of you are together in my name, I am there.” How incredible is it to think, that the same God who knows the number of grains of sand and who spoke the oceans and the waves into existence, wants to hang out with us. To know each one of us too!

Just like my friend desires to be close to his son, God is a good Father who desires to be close to us. He wants to spend time with us and has given us so many good gifts.

He promises in Jeremiah 29:13 that we will find Him if we look for Him. So let us, as Christians and surfers, be diligent to look for Jesus in all we do, and respond to His call to spend time with Him, in or out of the water.
