Hurricane Ernesto

Living Water

by Colbi Pickett, CS Girls East Coast Representative

We recently had a hurricane swell come through on the East Coast. While it wasn’t what everyone thought it was going to be, it was still super fun. At times, I felt like I was on a surf trip. It’s rare we get perfect clean peelers for 5 days straight.

I had to surf as much as possible because I didn’t know when the next swell would come through. Just like a surf trip, all plans were cancelled that interrupted the swell and we surfed multiple times a day. We even did a strike mission to try and get the best of the best!

When the hurricane finally fizzled out, it felt like what I surfed wasn’t enough. Those “Perfect waves” I caught weren’t enough. I didn’t feel full or satisfied… I just felt anxious for the next swell. As I planned for the next hurricane that would hopefully bring us waves, I thought “Then I’ll get enough… maybe then I’ll feel full.”

I’ve been a follower of Jesus 3x longer than I’ve been a surfer… but I still find myself drifting into finding fulfilment and fullness in surfing. Maybe that’s just a frustrated East Coast Surfer talking… or maybe it’s me trying to find fulfillment in anything but Christ, the only one that truly fills and satisfies.

This is something I have to constantly remind myself. As I patiently await the next swell, I can rest knowing I can be satisfied right here, right now. In Christ and Christ alone… the surf is just an extra cherry on top.

Psalm 16:5-11

You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are! I praise the Lord, because He guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. I am always aware of the Lord’s presence; He is near, and nothing can shake me. And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, because you protect me from the power of death. I have served you faithfully, and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead. You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.
