Rule number #7: Take a wave give a wave.

Living Water

by David Nehrig

We recently had the great opportunity to visit the crew down in CS Peru. They were truly a blessing to all of us and we learned so much. One evening, after surfing one of the longest lefts in the world “Chicama” (everyone needs to bump that spot up on your surf trip list by the way) we had a talk about wave Etiquette and rule #7.

Rule number #7 is: Take a wave give a wave.

We hired a couple boats to take us out to the spot “Chicama.” The boat drivers will drop you off at the top of the point. It is the weirdest thing, because they will drop you where you are perfectly inline to be first for the next set. It goes against every surf etiquette talk that I have ever been a part of. We try to settle into the line up, but still not really sure what to do. The whole idea to give a wave and then catch one went out the window. It was a whole different game. Every time you caught a wave (that could last up to a minute or more and the length of 2 to 3 American football fields) You would just raise your hand and here comes the boat. The driver would pick you up and motor you right back, to the top of the point.

To be honest, I had to paddle it a few times before I finally settled my mind into the luxury of the boat ride that would take me back to the top of the point. After this incredible experience, I had to reset my brain to go back to the reality of surfing my home beach break.

Now that we have returned home and the warm summer sun is coming out. We are leaving the cold dark winter behind us. I have been reminded of new beginnings.

Jesus’ mercy is new every morning scripture says.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

So as we enter a season change may we remember his Love never ceases. His mercy never ends.

My grandma was as close to Jesus as anyone I have ever known. She would whisper this verse. She would start and end her prayers with this verse. She really really understood it. She lived with the heart and mind of how great our God is. How His love and mercy is so big.

As I begin to shed off some layers and switch from my thick full suit, may I surf a little lighter, may I approach each and every day with a little more pep in my step. Our God’s mercy is new every morning. So instead of just following the rules of taking a wave and giving a wave maybe we all could receive God’s mercy new every morning and in return share it with others. What kind of line up would that look like?
