Jimmy joins the CS staff as a lifelong surfer (well…since the age of six) and after twenty-five plus years leading other ministries including Young Life, a local church and serving as a consultant to many other ministries nationally. Jimmy is a Carolina born and bred surfer and he loves the Tarheels almost as much as he loves surfing. Jimmy, his wife Shelly and two kids Bailey and Tyson, spend as much time together as they can enjoying the Carolina coast and their home-base of Charleston.
Paul HyersSurf Missions Director
There isn’t a surfboard shape that Paul doesn’t enjoy surfing or shaping. Although he is a very accomplished shaper, Paul spends much of his time thinking about how to connect surfers to a life changing ministry experience on a Surf Missions trip. Paul has a long history with CS and says the ministry changed his life, which is why he is so passionate about serving in his role on staff. He and his wife Summer life in St. Augustine FL.
Pat CummingsDirector of Partnerships and Initiatives
With over 40 years of experience leading ministries, Pat has the unique experience to lead our efforts to connect with like-minded ministries through our official and unofficial partnerships. Pat also leads our new CSALT internships initiative. When Pat isn’t connecting surfers to ministry opportunities and internships across the country, he is enjoying his home base in St. Augustine FL and spending time with his wife Mary and three grown children and grandchild (on the way).
Nick SammonsCreative Director
Every successful ministry needs a great storyteller to share the news of what God is doing in those lives the ministry impacts. Nick is our storyteller using video and other multi-media platforms to share the testimonies of changed lives and exciting ministry opportunities. Nick recently left a successful career in the entertainment industry to lend his talents to CS and we couldn’t be more excited to see how he captures the stories of CS. Nick lives with his Harley Davidson in southern California where he enjoys surfing and other outdoor pursuits.
Jacob GaluraNational Programs and Operations Manager
As a college student Jacob was very involved with his local CS Chapter in St. Augustine while at Flager College. After graduating with a sports management degree Jacob joined our staff to serve as our chief administrator of the programs such as our internships, surf camps and mission trips. Jacob also is on the front line serving our local chapters and helping to connect them to resources they need to connect surfers in their local areas to ministry opportunities. Jacob is still active in his local CS chapter and probably logs more time in the water than the rest of the staff combined.
Nate DormanProfessional Surfer / WQS Ambassador
Coming from the wave starved coast of South Carolina, Nate has become an accomplished surfer in waves from Hawaii to Australia and many other places as he travels and competes on the World Qualifying Series for the WSL. Nate leads bible studies with other professional surfers, speaks at churches and other ministries as well as represents CS to the world wide surfing community through our ambassador program.
Ana BarendSurf Chaplain
As a former professional surfer, Ana now serves a chaplain for professional and competitive surfers at the highest levels. She has encouraged many of the top surfers in the world in their faith. Ana is also a trained counselor and has been instrumental giving pastoral care and faith advise to the many who call her a friend.
U.S. National Board of Directors
Our current board of director chairperson, Lyle brings his experience as a pastor to our national team of staff and volunteers, which makes up CS in the U.S. Lyle is an experienced surfer and is well rounded in his love of other outdoor pursuits like mountain biking, wake boarding and hiking. Lyle lives in Orange County California with his wife and two of his adult sons where he serves as a pastor at Terra Nova church in Irvine, CA. Lyle also enjoys visiting his third son in Indonesia where he lives and surfs some of the world’s best waves.
Brad offers CS a wealth of knowledge regarding non-profit financial development because of his work with The Focus Group which is the consultant firm Brad owns and operates which serves non-profits nation wide. Brad loves that a much of the great work that CS is involved with is predominately volunteer lead worldwide. Brad lives with is wife and four children in St. Augustine, FL where Brad enjoys training for the many marathon races he competes in.
Sean is the board member who knows everyone in the surf industry. As the Executive Director of SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association), Sean is connected to many of the leaders on the business side of the surf industry and he keeps us in the loop regarding developments in the surf industry. Sean lives in Southern California with his wife and two sons where he serves faithfully at his local church and spends as much time as possible racing mountain bikes.
Ashley has the best surfing testimony. He shares that after years in the “rat race” of a successful career in banking and wealth management, a midlife crisis of sorts brought him into a local surf shop, which was a big turning point in his life. Ashley began surfing, introduced his son’s to surfing and later owned a surf shop of his own in Mount Pleasant SC where he lives with his wife and two sons.
Mary Gordon Kerr
“MG” is an accomplished water-woman as a surfer, sailor, skier and more. She also has written children’s books, flies airplanes, helps to lead worship at her church and she started a life-style clothing company called Red Nun 2, which named after a channel marker in the Charleston SC harbor where she lives with her husband and three children. She is talented addition to the board!
How does a guy who grew up in the Midwest become an accomplished surfer and eventually a chapter director? Who knows, but he has twice the stoke of most guys in the line up and always seems to be on the best waves around. Bill has many years experience serving on local non-profit boards and adds his professional experience as a former CFO and human resource leader to our board.
If time in the water and enthusiasm for surfing accounts for anything then Ashley is one of the best surfers on the planet! Whether at home surfing with friends and family or charging the waves in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador, Ashley is one stoked surfer. Ashley also has a huge heart for women’s ministry and is one of Monday Morning Devo contributing writers.
