BREATH….by JW Kaiser

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the water, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  – Genesis 1:1-2

The word used to describe the water as God hovered over it is the Hebrew word Mayim.  This is where we get the word mayhem. In other words, God hovered over the mayhem. Then we are told that he spoke the seas into existence with form.

Later in the creation story we see God breath human life into existence.  God’s breath brings form and design to the mayhem and chaos of creation as well as gives us life.

As a surfer I am grateful that this form included waves.  More importantly, as one who feels overwhelmed by the mayhem of life at times, it is comforting to know that we have a loving God who brings good design to life.

When describing the last moments of the life of Jesus, the gospel narrative tells us that as he took his last breath on the cross he “cried out again and then gave up his spirit”. Mathew 27:50

His breath brought Earthly life into existence and his last breath made eternal life possible.  As followers of Jesus, we have hope and assurance that in our eternal life there will be no more mayhem to deal with. I also have faith that God will breath some perfect waves into being for eternity so we can all surf together with Jesus!
