Recently I sat on one of the concrete benches overlooking Swami’s. It was a smaller day wave wise, but a completely beautiful morning. I was content just watching the handful of surfers crushing on their longboards. As I enjoyed the morning, I overhead a woman chatting with the surfers sitting on the next bench down. She was more than excited to see surfers enjoying the waves. This was her first time seeing surfing in person, she shared. The surfers she was talking to kindly answers her questions and it was fun to see her enthusiasm (and stoke) spilling over to anyone within earshot. It was convincing amazement!
I found myself wondering if I’m spending more time enjoying Jesus, or more time trying to share “about” Jesus and “explain” the mystery of a loving personal God. What if we just lived life to the full with joy and enthusiasm for the love of God in our lives… enjoying the person of Jesus? Would people be confused, repelled or drawn to Jesus?
In all four gospels (Books in the Bible about Jesus and his encounters with others) I can’t find a single time that people were repelled by the person of Jesus. Everyone was drawn to him. Well… except for the “religious” Pharisees who were obsessed with keeping the law and convincing others to do the same. They missed the opportunity to just enjoy and trust Jesus.
Am I the same? Or can I be more like the woman on the cliff bench overlooking Swamis whose joy and amazement stoked out everyone around.
“When they (the religious leaders) saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13
