My Will or His by Nate Dorman

Jeremiah 18:3-6 says,

“So I went to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the Lord came to me: O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? Declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.”

If you’re like me, you have often asked God “what is your will for ME and MY life”?

I have often fashioned a big life plan involving God and surfing and doing great things for Him. After creating MY master plan, I then ask God to throw a little blessing on it. Somehow I fall into thinking that I can craft my own plan for life better than God could. All I need is the name of Jesus like a lucky charm to hit up when things go south and I need help. Rather than depending fully on Him and his guidance, I try too hard to make things happen the way I want them to.

Imagine a surfboard blank before a shaper ever touches it. How useful is this block of foam going to be for riding waves? Imagine a lump of clay before it is turned into a pot. How useful would this lump of clay be for holding water? Just like clay needs a potter, or a blank needs a shaper, our lives need to be touched and changed by God. If you go about making plans on your own, even if they come from a good motive to honor God, without full surrender to Him they will not live up to God’s plan. Our own plans that are not formed by God are about as useful as an unformed block of clay for holding water, or an unshaped blank for doing an air reverse.

While we should have a passion and desire to do great things for God, we must remember not to be so ME, MY, MINE focused. In my finite mind, I know exactly what I need and what is best for my life. But don’t you think God knows more about what I need, and how I can be used for Him than I do?

Rather than trying to fit God into your plans, let him take you and fit you into his BIG plan to see all people come to the saving knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ.
