Saying Yes by Nate Dorman
“Day after day, in the Temple and from house to house, they never stopped preaching and teaching that Jesus is the Messiah.” Acts 5:42
As surfers, it’s easy to go on and on about waves, boards, barrels, etc. Because it’s so ingrained in the way we live our life, it’s easy to relate everything we do back to surfing. As I reflect on the past several years of my life, God has taken this passion for surfing to show me His heart and His love more than I ever imagined possible.
When I began surfing professionally, competing on the QS, I did not know a detailed five year plan of how life would go. What I did know, however, was my confidence in Jesus’ love for me and that no matter what I was doing or where I was going, I was going to love God and look for ways to join Him in loving other people.
From this posture of loving Jesus with my whole heart, no matter what He brought my way, I kept saying yes to opportunities that God dropped in my lap. God has continually opened the doors to where I am now; from studying the Bible in grad school, to accepting offers to teach, preach, and share the gospel, to surfing and competing around the world, and even pastoring H2O Church in Huntington Beach, CA.
Five years ago, I never would have imagined pastoring, surfing, traveling, or any of the other opportunities God has opened the door for. The one constant that has led to each of these opportunities has been letting Jesus shape my heart and my plans. It is from this daily surrender that I have gotten to join God at work.
Just like the disciples in Acts, I want to continue bringing the good news of Jesus day after day, and everywhere that I step foot! Whether in the ‘temple’, ‘house to house’, or lineup, classroom, office, beach, I want to faithfully love and follow Jesus. I cannot wait to see what the years to come have in store as I continue saying yes to God, surrendering to Him and following His ways in all that I do. Are you living your daily life for the purpose of bringing the good news of Jesus everywhere you go? What do you need to surrender to God to join Him at work in your life and in the lives of those around you?
