The Sounds Of Silence

It’s hard to find a place of silence on this planet. Yes, places of silence do exist. However, when people are answering their watches out in the line up, we have even lost that as a place to unplug and relax.
I was surfing near one of our piers that has a restaurant on it. It’s a painful place to surf in the evening. Especially, when the wind is offshore and the delicious smell of the crab dip appetizer wafts down to you, but I digress. Now you’re hungry and humming a tune!
As I was surfing near that pier, I heard music playing, and I thought “Ok some live music to surf to – cool.” Then I realized the music was coming from a dude wearing a fanny pack; or I guess now they are called sling bags, waist bags, belt bags, etc. Whatever you call them, he was wearing one with a waterproof speaker in it. He was listening to music out in the surf!
Don’t say “ok, boomer” just yet, hear me out. (I am Generation X, by the way.) I would venture to say most surfers paddle out to leave the cares and busyness and hassles of life on the beach. They find the ocean and the waves as a place of peace, of silence and solitude. This is healthy and good. As followers of Jesus, we need to practice what He did. “rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there prayed.” Mark 1:35
As disciples of Christ we should seek to create regular times of silence and solitude. So that we might pray and wait before the Lord. Psalm 62:1-2 says “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”
The world around us is loud and it screams for our attention. Let’s find time in our lives to “wait in silence” so we can better discern life and make wise choices amidst the chaos. This week let’s pause, slow down the mind. Let the soul enjoy the silence in the presence of God.
