Dead or Alive by JW Kaiser
I’ll cut right to it: I’ve nearly died a few times while surfing. I’d bet many of you reading this have too. Surfing is a fairly dangerous platform; heavy moving water, rocks, reefs, surfboards with sharp fins. ┬áThen there are the dangerous creatures in the water. I’m not talking about sharks, I’m referring to the tourists and weekend warriors paddling out a SUP on their knees into an oncoming set.
Did you know that even if you’ve survived the onslaught of entangled boards bailed straight in front of you or the thrashing of a rouge set wave pounding you into a reef, you and I are dead and many don’t know it? Actually, we are all one of two kinds of dead. There are many who are dead in their sins. This is a really bad kind of dead because there is nothing we can do about it. Sin is a big deal to God because it is not his best for us. When we choose to live life on our own terms it only leads to a death that we can’t depart from, both spiritually and physically.
However, there is great hope. For those who have decided to live by faith in relationship with Jesus, we also die. This kind of death is the good kind. It means we die to ourselves. We submit to God’s rescuing love for us and we die with Christ… but we also are raised with Christ. So, God bids us to come and die, and this death is the only hope for mankind.
We all are already one of two kinds of dead. Either dead in sin or dead to self… and alive in Christ!
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20
