A few years ago, I was surfing at my local break on one of those rare, perfect days — overhead rights, light offshore winds, and just me and a few friends in the lineup. I paddled into a wave, went for an air, but fell on the landing and took the nose of my board straight to my forehead. I surfaced to find I was bleeding, paddled in, and checked the cut. It was deep, but not enough to keep me out of the water. After searching the parking lot, I found some super glue, patched myself up, and paddled back out.
But as soon as I caught another set, something was off. My balance was gone, my body felt disoriented, and I knew immediately it wasn’t just the cut — it was a concussion. I left the water, drove to the ER, and they confirmed both the concussion and the need to properly re-close my wound.
That moment reminded me how fragile life is. Everything seemed fine until I realized I wasn’t okay. Isn’t that how life often goes? We push forward, thinking we’re fine, even when we’re not. Spiritually, we can do the same — ignoring our brokenness, trying to patch ourselves up, but still desperately in need of true healing.
As followers of Jesus, we recognize our need for a Savior. Scripture reminds us:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Yet we often chase things we believe will fulfill us — success, pleasure, and even good things like family or career — only to find they don’t last. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
True life, purpose, and fulfillment can only be found in Him.
When our focus is not on Christ, everything feels off balance — just like surfing with a concussion. But when our eyes are fixed on Jesus, everything comes into perspective.
Acts 17:28
“For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
He shows us who we are, who He is, and the relationship He invites us into.
Yet even as believers, it’s easy to forget. We drift, we get distracted, and we chase after things that don’t satisfy.
But the truth remains: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).
You are fully and wholly loved by the God who created you in His image (Genesis 1:27) and invites you into a life of hope and purpose in Him (Jeremiah 29:11).
When was the last time you slowed down, set aside distractions, and simply sat in the truth that God is head over heels in love with you?
