So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
Trunking it in the summer after wearing a wetsuit all winter is the best feeling. There’s no more wrestling into a cold, damp suit in the parking lot. There are no tight shoulders, and no extra weight. Just grabbing your board, paddling out with the sun on your back – nothing restricting you. It feels free.
When we’re saved and follow Jesus, He says we are free. Free from sin. Free from shame. Free from condemnation (Romans 8:1). We’re not who we used to be, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). And through Him, we’ve been made righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).
But sometimes we don’t fully believe that. We replay old mistakes or question whether God really forgave us. My friend Maddie once said, “Doubt is like dragging a sandbag everywhere you go, you’re still moving forward, but you’re carrying extra weight.” That’s what it’s like when we hold onto sin and shame Jesus already took from us.
We are forgiven. We are made new. Nothing is holding us back anymore. We can stand on the promise that who the Son sets free is free indeed.
