Time in the Sun (Son)

Those of us of a certain age will remember the bleached blonde craze of the late 90s and early 00s. It seemed like everyone, male and female, wanted their hair to be blonde. What always kinda blew my mind was how seemingly quickly you would start to see the true color, the roots.

Maybe it’s just me getting older or some of the “distinguished” hairs coming through, but recently my wife and I noticed how light my hair had become, with crazy blonde highlights that I have never had in my life. As we were discussing it, we came to the conclusion, or really the realization, that the change was due to consistent, prolonged, and repetitive time in the sun. I had been consistently in the sun at the beach for hours a day, teaching or surfing, for about a year. Slowly, the change started, little by little, highlights here and there, until by the time we noticed, my entire hair color had changed. And as long as I continue that consistent, repetitive, prolonged time in the sun, that change will be a permanent part of me, my life, and my identity.

It got me thinking about how that’s just the same as our faith. The more consistently we can spend prolonged time in God’s word, the more it will change us. Little by little, it grows into every part of our being, actions, and demeanor. The more we spend time in the sun, the more our hair color can change. But the more time we spend in the Son, the more our eternities can change. We grow more and more into a person whose being is changed to be a reflection of Jesus.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬
