Waves Don’t Discriminate

Written By: Colbi Pickett | East Coast Girls Representative

We’ve had some good swell come through lately. Paddling out, you can usually tell the seasoned surfers from the newer ones. When the bigger sets roll in, some get caught inside and wipe out. Others move with intention — timing their duck dives just right, pushing deep beneath the power of the wave, and coming up on the other side with a smooth paddle out and a better session ahead.

It made me think about our walk with the Lord.

The waves of life don’t discriminate — sets roll in for all of us. We face challenges, uncertainty, and pressure. They come whether we’re ready or not. But what makes the difference isn’t the wave — it’s how we move through it.

The deeper we go in our relationship with God, the steadier we become when life crashes over us. When we’re rooted in Him, we learn how to “duck dive” the hard things. Instead of getting tossed around on the surface, we’re able to go beneath it, anchored in something stronger.

Just like in the ocean, we’re all facing the same sets — but not everyone moves through them the same way.

I know for me, when I stay shallow in my faith, I feel every hit. I get overwhelmed, anxious, and thrown off course. But when I press deeper into the Lord, there’s a peace that carries me through — even when the waves are heavy.

Psalm 42:7 says, “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.”
