After so many years surfing, we tend to become jaded. Our sessions become a “practice” and we start to become more concerned about our performance and progression. I hear all too often the grumbling of surfers not satisfied with their session. It can happen to all of us.
When I find myself feeling this way, I remind myself of where it all started. The feeling and connection with the water and surfing had captured my very essence. Teach a grommet or at a surf camp, and you’ll see the feeling etched all over their faces.
Sometimes in our faith walk, we can also go through valleys, maybe not feeling as connected to the Lord or becoming jaded with facets of modern Christianity. But just like with surfing, I always find it helpful to try and remember the start. Why did you choose to follow Jesus? What were the circumstances, and how did you feel at the time? Oftentimes, even just thinking about these topics can reinvigorate one’s spirit and faith.
So the next time you’re feeling bummed about your surfing – remember why you started: because it’s fun! And next time you’re feeling low in your faith walk, try to remember the start.
Hebrews 3:14
“We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.”
