I was recently on a surf trip where the waves were much heavier than what I usually surf. Over the course of the week, I found myself getting tossed by the ocean wave after wave. I started to question myself and was sitting in the water full of anger and frustration.
But then I started to take in my surroundings and realized what an incredible opportunity it is to be a surfer. We get to be surrounded by God’s creation and surf the waves He sends us. How cool is that?
Recently, I’ve been studying Galatians 5 and the fruits of the Spirit. Sitting out in the water, I started to combat my fleshly anger and frustration with verses 22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
I began to repeat the fruits of the Spirit over and over under my breath as I waited in the water. I filled my heart with gratitude rather than letting myself succumb to frustration. And as I sat and watched the beautiful Costa Rican sunset, I saw a perfect set wave coming straight my way. As I surfed that wave, it felt like Jesus was right there surfing with me. It was the only wave I caught that session, but I was beyond satisfied.
