We’ve all experienced one more wave syndrome. You could be catching wave after wave for hours, but as soon as you decide your next wave will be the one you take in… the ocean lulls and you’re left sitting out there, contemplating whether it’s worth it to continue waiting or if you should just call it and paddle in. It can be easy to want to rush to the next wave and miss the beauty of waiting for sets.
In a season of waiting, we often become frustrated as we wait for the next big thing— whether that’s a job, a partner, or even just the next surf trip. Maybe you’ve been praying the same prayer for a while, and you’re ready to just call it and paddle in.
But Jesus calls us to be patient and to trust in Him. We can’t control the ocean or when the waves come. Rather than rushing, focus your attention on the bits of beauty that can be easy to overlook in anticipation.
David writes, in Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
As you wait between sets, take time to absorb the beauty of God’s creation. The reflection of the sunrise over the water, the small ripples that lap against your board, the call of seagulls overhead— all of creation cries holy! Take this same idea into your life outside the water, finding beauty in the waiting and placing your trust in God’s perfect timing.
